Lutz Donnerhacke for ICANN? |
Links
It's not unfair to list the last three links. Currently there are eleven
living Donnerhackes in this world: parents(2), brother(1), grandpa(1),
uncle(1), aunt(1), cousine(1), cousin(1), his wife(1), a remote relative(1),
and me(1). (On 2000-9-8 an other Donnerhacke reached the world.)
The short story
Due to my good experiences with the Internet, I try to give something
back regulary.
As a known contact person of the (Use)net I know a lot of people over and
from the net. My technical background is not so bad, I mostly mix well with
journalists and I have some connections into politics and business
(information technology and telecommunication). So I was asked to candidate
for ICANN. After clearing up financial subsidy and availability of enough
time to do this job well, I sent the message.
Why?
ICANN does a technical job. This has to be done by people with sufficient
technical knowledge. This includes the power to estimate the consequences.
I do not accept destruction of the name space by marketing departments.
My current point of view is: every company urges to collapse its physical
address into a single name in its country or in an international list
(org, com, net). If this single token matches the name of another token in one
of several country-specific lists, both token owners suit each other. I do
not believe in any improvement by adding more international lists to this
scheme.
Several new registrars offer a different understanding of the Internet.
It becomes more and more difficult to find out who is responsible for
a failture of a DNS node or an erronous record. The movement of domain data
from RIPE to DENIC falls in this category.
IP addresses are orthogonal to the name system. Errors in this system
cause immediate failures in routing. The main routing problems are growing
routing tables and incorrect announcements. In order to protect and resolve
these weak points in the future, profund knowledge of used and proposed
technologies is necessary.
